Mentoring the Doula, Doula as Mentor

Although you learn a lot in a three- to four-day doula training, when you actually start to conduct interviews and go to births—the learning curve accelerates! And hunger for ongoing training and skill development  …

In recent years, the decades-old tradition of taking a six-week series of childbirth classes has been in decline. Some women don’t take any classes, while others cram as much as possible in a one-day class. The new trends in our changing birth culture include yoga classes, following a prenatal app, and hiring a doula. Perhaps this trend presents new opportunities for doulas who want to mentor new mothers and couples to offer mini-teaching modules during those visits, and not just check off a list.

In the traditional midwifery model, mentoring new mothers during friendly conversation over a cup of tea during prenatal or postpartum visits was customary, this was before childbirth classes and prenatal care were delegated to different people, to be taken in different places and times. So rather than inventing something new, we can return full circle to a former and practical model. There is a real advantage in the doula as mentor: sharing information and offering can build rapport, friendship, trust, and a working-relationship before labor.

This four-week webinar series is for all doulas, new to experienced.

A Story-Medicine Retreat

Discover the Hidden Gold Compass on Your Life Map

On a heroic journey you need an inner map to infuse your imagination. Feeling a Call to begin anew, to change directions in career, home, relationships—or perhaps to do something you’ve never done but feel you were born to do?  Or did you Just get off the hook in an Ordeal and want to get “home?” Looking for a sign, direction, or a clew?

Great Stories are “maps” for the heart and soul because they mirror the personal story you are living and want to live.

Retreats are for resting the body and mind. After hearing a great story, kick off your shoes, curl up and lounge on pillows or take a leisurely nap—incubate the story's message for you.

This Story Retreat may be just

the Medicine you are looking for.

Stories for personal and professional growth.

After a story gets under your skin and ignites a transformation in you

it becomes Medicine that you can share with others.
